Nobuo “Hara” (born Nobuo Tsukahara) is a Japanese saxophonist best known for leading the big band Sharp & Flats, with whom he released over 100 albums since 1951. Hozan Yamamoto, a renowned shakuhachi (traditional Japanese flute) player, earned the title of Living National Treasure in 2002 for his cultural contributions.
Their first collaboration was a live recording at the 1967 Newport Jazz Festival, followed by their 1968 studio album, New Jazz in Japan. This record, not reissued since 1971, showcases a unique blend of Hara’s tenor sax and Yamamoto’s shakuhachi, complemented by the powerful backing of Sharp & Flats, creating a truly distinctive sound.
